But we still recommend closing a browser before editing it’s associated cookies because the major browsers all keep a cache of their cookies and will automatically restore anything they have not themselves removed.

Endringer for v30.9.2014 - v31.0.2014

  • SQLite Database
  • Both Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome use a public domain database called SQLite. To properly monitor these and future browsers WinPatrol also uses SQLite, WinPatrol has been using a library SQLite3.DLL, provided by the developers of SQLite. In our new version, we've included the source code for the SQLite functions we need into WinPatrol. Adding the source code directly we have more control over accessing data and can also optimize the code to improve performance. We can also remove any extra code which isn't required so less memory is used.
  • You may notice in the WinPatrol list of hidden files many files that begin with "etilqs" followed by random characters. These are SQLite files as you may notice etilqs is SQLite backwards.
  • Pale Moon
  • Many browsers use Mozilla as the core of their functionality. Recently, many WinPatrol users have requested support for a Mozilla browser, Pale Moon. This browser will now automatically be detected so cookies stored by Pale Moon will be managed by WinPatrols view cookies and real-time filtering feature.
  • Pale Moon will also be listed as a browser in the standard WinPatrol Report.
  • New Icons
  • The Scotty system tray icon is easier to see with a new traditional Scotty icon on a blue tile background. The Blue Orb icon introduced when our original icon was hard to view on Vista will no longer be used. This will also mean we won't need the option to use our old traditional Scotty icon.
  • For anyone with a Start Menu, you'll also find more readable tile icons for WinPatrol, WinPatrol Explorer, Uninstall and Help.
  • Safe Update Version Info
  • Our Safe Update button will now include version information for security programs Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and Microsoft Security Essentials where appropriate.
  • Server Optimization
  • WinPatrol v31 now optimizes communication with our server when a severe attack occurs. While WinPatrol will never create enough traffic to hurt your local network our new optimization will make sure you have all the bandwidth you need.

Endringer for v30.5.2014.1 - v30.9.2014

  • Tooltips
  • As promised I've focused on making WinPatrol easier and more powerful in 2014 with monthly updates. This version now includes Windows tooltips to provide a consistent, helpful interface.
  • In the past, I've avoided tooltips because I knew it would make WinPatrol larger, taking more space in memory. That's how much effort ase put into making WinPatrol as optimized as possible. It also presents an extra challenge for our volunteers who help translate text messages into other languages. I was wrong and now you can choose your favorite tooltip style.
  • After performing various benchmark tests we found the actual memory used by tool tips would not impact the performance of a Windows based computer. Even machines with as little as 512K of memory were not effected by the new tool tips features. The benefits will really make WinPatrol easier to understand for new users and even folks who have used WinPatrol for years.
  • If someone doesn't like Tooltips or wants to use the cartoon like tool tips the Options tab provides a way to set the tooltip style to your personal preference.
  • Cookie Update for Chrome and Firefox
  • WinPatrol uses the same public domain code that is used by Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox and other new browsers. This version includes a copy of the newest library which appears in the WinPatrol folder as sqlite3.dll. You may notice in the WinPatrol list of hidden files many files that begin with "elitls" followed by random characters. These are SQLite files as you may notice elitls is SQLite backwards.
  • Window Positioning
  • We've updated some Window components that weren't completely visible on some machines with custom DPI.

Endringer for 30.5.2014 - v30.5.2014.1

  • Fixed errors with Delayed Start programs on x64 version of Windows. Affected programs originally set to run from HKey Local Machine registry.

Endringer for v30.0.2014 - v30.1.2014

  • This 2nd release of WinPatrol 2014 provides a number of bug fixes that have been reported and improvements that have been requested. In the process of our code review additional optimizations were found. The result is a more stable version of WinPatrol that you can count on to run WinPatrol in the background without any interference.
  • International Date and Time Formats
  • As previously announced WinPatrol 2014 will continue to support our friends outside the U.S. You'll find this version handles formats as defined in the region control panel applet.
  • SQLite - Cookies
  • The only 3rd party software used by WinPatrol is an open-source public domain library named SQLite3.DLL This file is used by Chrome and Mozilla to store their cookies. If you see files in our Hidden list that start with "etilqs_" they indicate a SQLite database files. WinPatrol uses this file to help you manage your cookies. To continue our full cookie support this update includes the latest SQLite library.
  • WinPatrol Installation
  • The setup program has been improved to include more information on using WinPatrol effectively.
  • Graphic Enhancements
  • Graphics associated with WinPatrol lists have been updated. The graphic which represents real-time monitoring has been updated so PLUS users are provided a clear indication that monitoring is active.
  • ActiveX Non-PLUS error
  • We've had some reports that indicate WinPatrol can get confused about being a PLUS version. The main symptom is having an update button appear in the list of ActiveX controls.
  • Column Sorting
  • One of the functions used by our column sorting has been improved so sorting programs will be more consistent. In the process we also found that the company was not being displayed correctly.
  • Environment Variables
  • This version fixes a big in our handling of the %SYSTEMROOT% environment variable. It also improves handling of 64 bit file redirection for other environment variables.

Endringer for v29.1.2013.1 - v29.2.2013

  • Quick Fixes
  • Fixed false warnings about changes to Windows AutoUpdate status
  • Reduced warnings of daily Microsoft updates that created Uninstall warnings
  • Artificial Intelligence Security
  • This new feature will increase WinPatrol's value exponentially over time. It will also be accessible for our future apps like Task Catcher "Extreme" and other partners interested in licensing the technology. Unlike the Optional sharing of choices used on our Community Info pages, all A.I. Security data is kept private on your machine.
  • Phase 2 including focus groups and beta testing of Task Catcher Extreme will be restricted to current Task Catcher customers and/or BillP Studio Associates who agree to a strict NDA.
  • Our WinPatrol-powered A.I.S. provides the 3rd generation of innovations created by BillP Studios to detect and stop dangerous new threats without crippling your computer.
  • We believe a passive approach can still be used to detect and shut down instant attacks like Cryptolocker. We're seeing a trend in threats that remain in memory instead of becoming resident in the Windows registry or hard drive. These attacks will not be detected by most traditional Anti-Virus programs.
  • Improvements and Bug Reports
  • Semi-Transparent Alert messages available on Windows 8 make Scotty less intrusive.
  • Manifest file updated to support presistant WinPatrol window size and positions when using alternate DPI settings.
  • Improvements to our Active Task List and more success Killing of active tasks using multi-selection standards.
  • Introduction of new triggers to increase performance by reducing redundant monitoring(PLUS Only)
  • Improved performance of change detection on our free version.
  • Improved screen UI and description when a change is detected for the Windows Update settings. ( Did you know WinPatrol monitored changes to the Windows Update? )
  • The default setting for File Explorer integration is now disabled. It's been pointed out that a large number of programs taking advantage of the right-click context menu wthout asking. We also don't want to seem like we're nagging users to upgrade to WinPatrol PLUS.

Endringer for v28.9.2013 - v28.9.2013.1

  • Fixed handling of references to environment variable %windir%
  • Fixed Services dialog crashing found by Delete on Reboot function.

Endringer for v28.8.2013 - v28.9.2013

  • As sometimes happens when you add one feature you break another. For anyone who installed WinPatrol 28.8 on a non Windows 8 system the "Disabled" status of startup programs is now being displayed propertly. This version 28.9 will fix that problem.

Endringer for v28.6.2013 - v28.8.2013

  • Update Notification.
  • Ironically one of our new fixes relates to text on our PLUS screen that lets you know when a new version is available. By popular demand WinPatrol will now send a message letting you know when a new build is available. When this notification is displayed we also change the text on the PLUS screen to remind you. Unfortunately, the text didn't always reset after you upgraded to the new version. This version will resolve that issue.
  • (All Users)
  • Windows 8 Task Manager.
  • Instead of using MSConfig, Windows 8 includes a list of Startup programs as a tab in the new Task Manager. Users can disable startup programs using the Windows Task Manager. While WinPatrol's "Disable" feature includes additional features it now recognizes choices made by the Task Manager and will alert Task Manager when files are disabled by WinPatrol. As in the past WinPatrol will monitor programs which are disabled so if they are forced back to normal by a partner program, WinPatrol will automatically reset them to disabled unless you click to Enable the program.
  • (Windows 8 Only)

Endringer for v28.1.2013 - v28.5.2013

  • This update provides enhancements and fixes to version 28. The number of changes have been done to support machines that have 64 bit processors. The other major enhancement is in the removing of unwanted toolbars that won't uninstall correctly. This type of enhancement will continue in future updates.
  • Fixed dialog used to select current user or all users when launching a program.
  • Fix to Delayed Start programs that don't properly launch
  • Moved Repair and Reset Tools from PLUS to Options tab//screen.
  • Enhanced removability of unwanted toolbars.
  • Improvements to Community Shield based on other WinPatrol users.

Endringer for v28.0.2013 - v28.1.2013

  • Allows WinPatrol to start for current user or all users.
  • Reduced monitoring during all sleep states to save battery usage.
  • Fixed Reset function to remove duplicate Scotty icons.
  • Fixed Reset function to remove duplicate Uninstall entries.
  • Speeds up real-time detection.
  • Fixed bug in system tray icon behavior that could have produce unknown results.
  • Improved handling of repeating changes made by partner programs.
  • Fixed "Automatically Run WinPatrol..." option so it doesn't always launch on boot

Endringer for v26.1.2013 - v27.0.2013

  • *New* Automatic Update Notification
  • The newest feature is one many users have asked about for years. While I'm not a big fan of software that provides automatic updates, making sure everyone knows when a new version of WinPatrol was available makes sense. Our new version will provide notification within a reasonable time and allow users to read about the new version before deciding to install it.
  • *FIX* WinPatrol Crashing When Replying to Changes
  • Our new version includes a layer of protection that will discourage any future attacks and crash safely.

Endringer for v25.0.2012.5 - v25.6.2012.1

  • Based on user feedback and especially the extra effort from loyal WinPatrol fans we've improved reliability with WinPatrol 25.6.2012.1. WinPatrol features work better than ever and we've removed the possibility of confusing messages that may have given incorrect alert messages.
  • 25.6.2012.1 Minor Update for Windows XP 32 bit systems to fix RegDeleteKeyEx error
  • Fixed Multiple Alerts When Startup Removed
  • One of the newest features of WinPatrol 25 is letting users know if a Startup program had been removed without their knowledge. Unfortunately, occasionally a bug appeared that once the initial warning appeared, WinPatrol continued to warn about the removal of other programs which still existed in the list of Startup Programs.
  • Windows 7 Performance Boost
  • WinPatrol has always worked well with all versions of Windows including Windows 7, this version takes better advantage of performance ability available to Windows 7 users.
  • Multiple Add/Remove Uninstall Entries
  • When checking the Uninstall list using the Add/Remove or Uninstall applet, WinPatrol may have retained previous versions. This version will remove past entries that exist.
  • License Agreement Info
  • In the past the license agreement for various WinPatrol versions were not clearly stated and easy to find on our website. The new setup program includes a description of the Free, PLUS, Family Pack and special licenses. Users will now see how unique WinPatrol is and what few restrictions exist.
  • Scotty Barking at Random
  • This has been a long time unexplainable quirk that never made sense. Reports of Scotty barking with no alert should be a thing of the past.
  • IE Helper Enhanced
  • Some IE Helpers may have been missed on some machines. They will all now be properly displayed.
  • Uninstall Enhancements
  • While we now have a stand alone WinPatrolRemove program, this version includes an Uninstaller that works much better than our past embarrassments. Improvements to the WinPatrol Uninstall program will now removed registry entries that gave incorrect screen positions when multiple monitors were used. We'll also remove any language packs which you may have installed in error.
  • Explorer Menu Integration
  • While some users may still not have the full privileges, most users will be able to look up PLUS Info for EXE's and DLL's directly from the right-click menu on Explorer file lists.

Endringer for v25.0.2012.1 - v25.0.2012.5

  • Fixed repeating Uninstall warnings.
  • Repositioned text fields being cut off.

Endringer for v24.0.2012.1 - v24.1.2012

  • Delayed Start
  • While not everyone had the same experience some folks reported that Delayed Start was no longer working with WinPatrol 2012
  • This update will resolve this error and give back one of your favorite features.
  • Hidden Files 64 bit
  • This update also helps fix a bug in the display of hidden files on 64 bit versions of Windows. It doesn't affect any other versions and has no impact unless you're using Windows 64 bit version. You'll know you have Windows 64 bit if you notice the you have both a Program Files folder and one called Program Files (x86).

Endringer for v20.0.2011.1 - v20.0.2011.2

  • Fixed repeating alert that apears related to Windows 7 SP1 and Autoupdate monitoring

Endringer for v19.3.2010.5 - v20.0.2011

  • What's New? The last new version of WinPatrol was release in early November, 2010 just before Scotty’s 11th birthday. This week I’m happy to announce to release the new and improved WinPatrol 2011. Scotty even has a new 2011 look
  • As more computers are sold with the 64 bit version of Window we've worked hard to keep up and make sure Scotty doesn't lag behind the technology. We found some quirks on 64 bit systems but thanks to support from our friends at Microsoft and other security vendors we’ve created version that runs faster than ever on 64 bit systems.
  • Active Task You'll notice more information available on our list of Active Tasks. Sorting on the module ID you’ll be able to see which DLL files are used by running tasks. You'll find two new columns and on newer versions of Windows with additional information. Over the years this has been a popular request and we will continue to add information which is useful to all users. Active Tasks is usually the first place you'll check to remove any unwanted programs from reappearing so the more information the better.
  • ZeroDay Alerts WinPatrol 2011 responds far better to repeating alerts from unknown sources. These infiltrations can happen to anyone just having a vulnerable application on their computer. Files which are repeating alerts are also tracked to provide quicker creation of PLUS Info for new threats.
  • Delayed Start This new feature is proving to be very popular with new users. We fixed a bug on 64 bit systems when moving programs from the Startup Programs list to Delayed Start.
  • Services Display bug fixed when changing startup status. Fixed bug in 64 bit Windows when displaying non-Microsoft Services only.
  • Activation Corrected Internet error message when trying to activate PLUS features. We obviously want to make it as easy as possible to upgrade from the Free Edition to WinPatrol PLUS. We continue to make it a great deal even for folks short on cash and the future of WinPatrol really depends on continued support from our PLUS members.

Endringer for v19.3.2010.2 - v19.3.2010.5

  • Fixed issue on 64 machines that opened the main WinPatrol interface(and UAC) on reboot

Endringer for v19.3.2010.1 - v19.3.2010.2

  • Removed debug message that appeared when programs are removed. Fixed issue when some valid username/codes were not accepted.

Endringer for v19.3.2010.0 - v19.3.2010.1

  • Fixed problem finding the cookie folder on Windows XP systems Prevent main interface from opening on startup when not requested

Endringer for v19.1.2010.1 - v19.3.2010.0

  • Fixed bug preventing activation on machines with stubburn firewalls Fixed bug causing WinPatrol's tabbed interface to open on reboot Enhanced abilable to find proper cookie folder Fixed bug in 64 bit systems that did not display all disabled Startup items and IE Helpers.

Endringer for v19.0 - v19.1

  • Fixed problems on Windows 64 bits systems. Not all Startup programs were being detected and displayed. Some programs were also missing Date Detected values which will be initialized on install of this version.
  • Default icons are now displayed when no program icon exist.

Endringer for v16.0.2009 - v16.0.2009.1

  • Changes only affect Vista and Windows 7 users
  • Improved HOSTs change detection in Vista
  • Fixed Exit dialog (if checked) when switching to UAC mode.
  • Remove redunant switching to UAC mode dialog. All versions
  • AutoUpdate and UAC change detected included in Option with HOST file changes

Endringer for v12.2.2007.0 - v14.0.2007.0

  • Enhanced Keylogger Detection The use of keyloggers for illegal purposes has exploded. A Schenectady man was recently jailed for up to three years for felony eavesdropping after putting a keylogger on his wife's computer. I've heard too many stories of abuse made possible due to keyloggers so it's time for it to stop. While WinPatrol PLUS had always detected keyloggers we've enhanced this feature and it's now available to free users so everyone is protected.
  • Interactive PLUS code Activation Unfortunately the number of users depending on illegal PLUS codes has become a problem. While honored by the worldwide popularity of WinPatrol this could slow down access to PLUS information by our paid supporters. Our new version will do more to screen out invalid codes. In a few cases, users may find their valid codes are no longer working correctly. Those affected can write to support @ WinPatrol.com and we'll make sure they receive the correct code.
  • Optimized Detection of New Services As more and more programs move to the Windows Service model it become apparent that this may be a popular avenue of attack in the future. The routine used to monitor and detect new Window Services has been optimized to make this process transparent.
  • Decrease CPU Usage and Conflicts Conflicts with some other registry intense programs may have resulted in abnormally high CPU usage on past versions. WinPatrol 14 includes some intelligent routines to allow complete protection without fighting over resources with other security suites and system level programs.
  • Default -expressboot option WinPatrol now includes a -expressboot option which will be used when machines boot up for the first time. This new feature optimizes boot time and allows other applications to maximize their initialization routines.
  • Regular Registry Cleanup Some registry cleaners have complained that we don't clean up some data stored in the registry quickly enough. This version will remove information that is no longer needed and "First Detected" information on a regular basic when the file no longer exists.
  • Multiple copies of WinPatrol in startup Occasionally, users have written to let us know they have multiple copies of Scotty in the list of Startup programs. This version can correct any errors by checking the "Automatically run WinPatrol" box under the Options tab.
  • Thank you for your support!

Endringer for v12.1.2007.5 - v12.2.2007.0

  • Detect changes are made to your Automatic Update settings.
  • The main reason for the feature is still to fight changes by malicious programs but it will also let you know if anyone like Microsoft makes changes without your knowledge.
  • Detect changes to your default browser prefix
  • If you don’t include http:// when you type in an address, Windows automatically adds it. If a malware program includes their address in this location, you'll always go to their site, not matter what you type in.
  • Properly detect registry settings which don't meet Windows guidelines.
  • Online PLUS activation added to support affiliate partnerships

Endringer for v12.0.2007 - v12.0.2007.1

Endringer for v10.0.2007 - v12.0.2007

  • What's New
  • New Scotty Icon - You'll see a brand new icon in your taskbar. Many users are using the default dark theme in Vista and have suggested a new icon so they can see Scotty and feel more secure.
  • Two New Report Options - Folks have been asking for more information especially for helping their friends and family fix problems. Our new version includes two new output formats designed to help diagnose any problem.
  • HijackPatrol Log - The new HijackPatrol Log button on the options screen will create and display a style of output familiar to many online helpers. HiJackPatrol.logs aren't exact duplicates of the popular HijackThis log or meant to replace them but the format should be familiar. HijackPatrol logs will also contain additional information which is routinely monitored by WinPatrol.
  • SpreadSheet Log - Important details will be output in a CSV(Comma Separated Value) format popular with spreadsheets and many database programs. WinPatrol users will be able to sort all their system data in any format they want.
  • Easy Access to PLUS Info - Program properties and PLUS Info have been combined into a single page of information from our extensive online library. Instead of multiple steps, you can now just double click on any filename to access the new improved PLUS format. Free WinPatrol users will also see improved information to help them decide if a program is worthy.
  • PLUS Requests updated for future expansion - This change also allows us to expand our PLUS Info response and provide more specific and helpful information based on more than just a filename. You'll see some additions immediately when using WinPatrol 2007 version 12.
  • Bugs Fixed Yea, I found one or two
  • Fix size bug in autodetection of Explorer/Run/Policy autostart entry
  • Auto correct screen position errors on multiple monitor systems when registry has been corrupted.
  • Local flag sent for any country code and not just ones currently supported
  • Secret Startup location checkbox now available immediately after entering PLUS name/code.
  • Found solution to why Scotty's bark was silent in Vista.
  • Fixed bug reading large HOST, WinPatrol History and Netscape Cookie files
  • Thank you for your support!
